Weekly Happenings: 2/12-2/17
Fri, 02/12/2010 - 08:13 — emilieLabdien,
Sorry I'm so late with my e-mail this week. I was out of
town for a few days, and still have not recovered. Whenever I go on a
business trip, my life gets thrown off, particularly in the three areas
over which triathletes obsess the most: sleeping, eating, and training.
Going to sleep at 12:30, waking up to ride the trainer at 5:30 (yes, I
am that person who lugs her bike and trainer on a business trip, much
to the confusion of my co-worker,) eating lunch at 4:00. It can be very
hard to stay motivated and focused. I found that, when locked in my
little hotel room with my bike right by my bed--waiting for and judging
me. Sure, I could have passed out, exhausted, in my work clothes while
watching a re-run of Law and Order (in fact, I am not going to pretend
for a second I haven't done that.) This time, though, I climbed into
the saddle of my condescending bicycle and even made it into the next
re-run of Law and Order. Though this may be but a small triumph, it is
a triumph nonetheless. With six inches of snow on the ground, I'll take
what I can get. Happy training.

Weekly Happenings: 2/4-2/10
Wed, 02/03/2010 - 00:24 — emilieHowzitgaun,
I realize my greeting this week is technically English,
or Scottish to be precise in "dialect," but I couldn't resist. My
latest addiction for passing the time during a jog, on my trainer, or
at my CAD tube at work are "Coffee Break Spanish" podcasts. I have
arbitrarily decided to brush up on my Spanish, and this is a pretty
easy and portable way to do so. What's great is that the narrators of
the podcast are Scottish. What's even more great is that they are
speaking Spanish Spanish (as opposed to Mexican or Puerto Rican Spanish
that is often heard in the US.) For those of you versed in the
subtleties of the accents of Spanish-speakers, this means lots of
dip-thongs, lisps, and use of the Spanish word for "y'all." I love it!
How
does this relate to your training, you say? I may be reaching for this
one, but here it goes. At the end of the figurative day, I will be
better at speaking Spanish for my practice, even if my pronunciation
becomes distorted by the underlying Scottish accent. This is not so
different from training with our good friends from the Track Club, Velo
Club or Masters' swim group. Does running 4x100m relays with the Track
Club prepare you for a run in a triathlon? You will (likely) never hand
off a baton in the middle of the run, but doing interval work can only
make you faster. Does riding your road bike in a pack with the Velo
Club and gluing yourself to someone's back wheel prepare you for
sitting on your aero-bars in a non-draft legal race? Assuming you are
not doing ITU racing, it will at the very least improve your handling
skills and push you further than you might otherwise be willing to go
(seriously, you have to be able to keep up with those guys before you
can draft, and it's easier said than done.) Will flip turns prepare you
for an open water swim? No, but swimming 4200 yards under the watchful
eye of a coach certainly will.
At the end of the literal day,
practice in the individual disciplines with the people who know them
best can make you better at triathlon on the whole. You may not need
all of the knowledge you gain, i.e., the fact that "gracias" is
pronounced "gra-thee-as" in Spain, but you will be a better triathlete.
So go forth and learn from the neighbors, be they across the pond or across the street.

all routes are out of Gallup, there are lots of opportunities for loops
and shortcuts, so you don't have to run the whole thing. Please meet at
the wooden car bridge. For the ambitious, make
it a brick after doing the Body Specs workout.

Hyperfit Trainer Ride - Club sponsor
HyperFit is offering a free trainer ride on Sundays at 8am, led by

bottle. I'll have a workout ready, but feel free to do your own thing
too. Invite your friends: anyone with a bike and trainer is welcome -

music! (well you can complain, but I'm not changing it....)"

Tuesday Track Club Workout
- Come have your butt handed to you by the track club. Workout starts
at 7:30 (not 7:00) in the field house. The bad news is that the price
is now $5, but the good news is that we get the track all to ourselves

This week: 12 x 200 m; 200 m jog.
Trainer Ride at Two Wheel Tango with AAVC
- Some of the fastest cyclists in town are in the Ann Arbor Velo Club.
Now you have a chance to train with them in the off season. Grab your
trainer and bike and head to Two Wheel Tango's Jackson Rd store from
6-8 p.m. for an organized ride. If you don't have a trainer, please
e-mail dave.vannette@gmail.com, as he may be able to scrounge one up for you.
OK, that's all for now. Please let me know if you have any questions.

recent Running Event in Austin, TX. See why by checking out their
stores and some of the events below.

the first time ever, prize money for the Martian Marathon. News from RF

Weekly Happenings: 12/17-12/23
Wed, 12/16/2009 - 22:51 — emilieHeisann,
I had an eye opening experience this week. Because I no longer have any
sort of race to look forward to (read: looming over my head,) I have
been partaking in more casual workouts as of late. This includes
spinning at several of the local gymnasiums. After an intense trainer
ride on Sunday at Hyperfit, I wanted a quick recovery ride. I headed to
one of said gyms, struggling with a bad "case of the Mondays." I had
SPD shoes, a towel, and a bottle of water, but I was in no way prepared
for the class. Within the first 15 minutes, 75% of the class was
belting out the chorus of Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good." The
content of the workout was adequately challenging, but I had to
maintain strict pseudo-aero position on the Spin bike in order to avoid
eye contact with the woman singing and gyrating right in front of my
bike. We abandoned a standing climb in order to free up our hands to
clap with the Village People's "In the Navy." To me, this was a
horrifying experience. However, the other 20+ people in the room seemed
to be having a blast.
I learned two things from this experience:
1. Check the class schedule ahead of time to ensure it is not the same instructor from that fateful day, and
2. Everybody is different. We all like a different pace, a different environment, a different tone.
We, the members of the Tri Club board, are here to provide to you, the members of the club. Please tell us what you are looking for. Like the Saturday morning run, but wish it were in a different place? Like the idea of a trainer ride, but don't actually own a trainer? Let me know! I want to help.
Speaking of help, I need yours.
Last call for designing the new kit for the club! - So far, I have received exactly ZERO submissions.
We have had much interest in getting club kit last year, but my total lack of artistic abilities didn't get us anywhere. Now I am asking for your help. Please, please, please! submit a design for Louis Garneau Delfino Racer Top and Delfino Bottom by 12/19. I only have on taker thus far; you don't want me left to my own devices on this one.

Weekly Happenings: 12/10-12/16
Tue, 12/08/2009 - 23:18 — emilieAsham, akkam,
It's time to dig the Yak Trax out of the closet, and probably the
windbreaker, too. Despite all of my whining about the cold, I love
running in the snow (except when it's April snow.)
Last fall, Jon and I were training for the Phoenix marathon in January.
Our long runs were always scheduled for Sundays. One Saturday, I was
checking the forecast for the next day, knowing that we had somewhere
around 18 miles on tap. There was already snow on the ground, and the
low was predicted to be in the mid-twenties - hardly favorable
conditions under most circumstances. However, a cold(er) front was
supposed to move in around 10 a.m., bringing in more snow and dropping
the temperature beneath the low. The conventional wisdom of waiting for
things to warm up around mid-day was quickly discarded. We resolved to
wake up at 6 a.m. the next morning and get our run out of the way
before the weather really took a turn for the arctic.
The next morning, we did in fact wake up early and pile on the layers
like we were going skiing. Two thoughts got me out the door, one being
that it was only going to get colder and more dreadful the longer I
procrastinated, the other being that every mile I skipped would make my
first marathon experience that much worse. We set out from home and
headed down Chalmers, a relatively quiet dirt road off Washtenaw. It
was dead silent and there were no cars. Jon and I peacefully jogged
down the middle of the snow-covered road, past the fancy subdivisions
full of Christmas lights. We then turned onto Huron River Drive, and
attempted to head down to Gallup. The fence kept us from getting in, so
we went back up the hill and across the bridge on Dixboro. Not
surprisingly, the foot path had not been cleared, and was actually
worse off than the road due to snow drifts. We high-stepped across the
bridge and down into the empty park. It was so beautiful that I was
able to displace all of my thoughts about normal people being in their
nice, warm beds instead of dragging their sorry ITBS-afflicted legs
through the snow on Yak Trax and a prayer. It was unforgettable. As was
the part, several hours later at the end of the run, when we passed by
Tappan Middle as we headed towards home. My Camel Back was completely
frozen, my Gu's were turning into solids, and the sign at Tappan read
"9:30 a.m., -13° F." I would have taken a picture, but my camera
phone had literally frozen and refused to take a picture. I couldn't
believe I was crazy enough to run in that weather, but that run is the
one with which I remember the most fondly. When I moved to Michigan, I
contended that I could not run when the temperature dropped below 50,
as it was too hard on my lungs. Turns out I just had to get out the
door, and I could blow 50 out of the water. Happy training!
Design the New Tri Club Kit - We have had much interest in
