Salamaleikum,
I don't know about you, but I really could not
be more pleased about the four-day work week. Is it unpatriotic of me
to suggest that Independence Day should be something more like Memorial
Day, wherein a three day weekend is always guaranteed? Think of all the
training you could do in mid-summer! Speaking of the 4th, just four
short years ago (okay, maybe that doesn't seem that short, actually,) I
ran my first ever 10k in preparation for my first ever Sprint. It was
the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, purportedly the largest 10k in the
nation, if not the world. Up to that point, I had run over 4 miles
exactly one time, was training on my 8-year old, 53 cm mountain bike,
and had never done an open water swim (haphazardly floating across Lake
Lanier with my legs through the armholes of a life jacket does not
count, I assume.) I was convinced I would surely perish if I had to
take one more step; how on earth would I do a triathlon? Yet here I am,
all this time later, still training, still racing, for longer and
longer distances. I have no proper athletic background, no history in
swimming, biking, or running. I say this not to brag, but to say that
there's room in this sport for all of us, and that there is always room
to improve. Everytime I get lapped in the pool at WCC by Mike
Fitzsimmons, eat the dust of Ken O'Day's Specialized on Seven Mile,
haggardly chase Erin O'Mara through the woods of Barton I know this,
and it helps me get better, if not in speed or endurance, at least in
resolve. But don't take my word for it; no matter what your ability (or
your self-deprecating assessment of your ability,) I do hope you will
come out to the workouts, the events, and the races with us to find out
for yourself.
Hopefully, you are inspired enough to read the rest of the e-mail, and
find out about said workouts and races. Without further adieu, here
they are:
Tri del Sol, 18 July - Join us for this MERCRS race
taking place in Middleville, MI. This longish sprint (0.5/18/4.5) is a
good chance to push your limits as a sprint athlete or test the waters
for an international. Regardless, I know we already have members signed
up, raring to go get some points for the club, so don't miss out on the
fun! More info here. E-mail me if you plan to race, and I will be happy to coordinate transportation, etc.
Thursday, 2 July
Julie Brick! - Brick is at 4961 Ravine Ct in
A2 (aka, Julie Parrish's house.) Please be ready to depart at 6 for a
~19 mile ride and tailored run (meaning you run as long as you feel
like running) through Matthaei.
Also, feel free to bring grillables, snacks, adult beverages, and whatever else you like for some good times on the porch!
Friday, 3 July
Swim and Run - Come join us for a swim in Silver Lake
(map here.)
Meet
at
6:30 by the picnic tables close to the second parking lot. Swim
course is a quarter-mile out and back. The water is downright pleasant;
I don't even scream or cry when I get in anymore (just kind of let out
a whimper.) I don't know the actual temp, but you will be fine without
a wetsuit. Bring your
running shoes, and try your luck against the world-famous Pinckney deer
flies. You better run fast, or they'll getcha.
Saturday, 4 July
Morning Run Sponsored by Running Fit -
Club partner, Running Fit, sponsors a 6-8 mile run starting promptly at
9:03 a.m. out of Gallup Park. Meet at the picnic tables in the second
parking lot (over the bridge.) If you have any questions about weather,
distance, etc., please contact our dashing workout coordinator, Sean (seangeary@yahoo.com.)
Running Fit offers perks for showing up weekly, starting with a free
water bottle after 6 runs and working up to a free tech shirt after 18.
Tempo Ride - Meet at 2745 Canterbury for a 30 mile ride at 8:00 a.m.
Sunday, 5 July
Long Outdoor Run - Meet in second parking lot of Gallup for a long
run. Jon and I will be slogging through a 2:30 run, but will be
circling Gallup, so feel free to jump on or off our run at any time.
Really, we could use the company.
Tuesday, 7 July
Tuesday Night Track Club Workout
- Partake in the Track Club's speed workout. BACK TO NEW/NEW LOCATION: Workout
is back at Gallup Park this week; meet at the wooden bridge. Warm-up starts at 6:30, and workout starts
at
7:00. Gallop 5 km prediction run – one full big loop + ~3/4 of full big loop.

That's all for now. If you have any questions, concerns, complaints, etc., let me know. That's what I'm here for.
